Guardians of the Gates

Bulls & Buffaloes

Bulls & Buffaloes
Notes: Hindus take the bull as a holy symbol. Shiva's guardian is Nandi the white bull. A statue of Nandi can often be seen watching over an alter to Shiva or at the entrance of a Saivite shrine. Nandi is said to embody sexual energy, and fertility. Riding on his back Shiva, is said to be in control of his sexual impulses.

Western astrology includes Tharus the Bull and the Egyptians revered the statue of the god Serapis. Serapis is represented in the form of a strong bull with a solar disk and uraeus, or royal cobra, between his horns.
